About St. Joseph County...

South Bend/Mishawaka is located about 10 miles south of the Michigan state line in north central Indiana.  This beautiful city is located along the St. Joseph River which flows north and empties into Lake Michigan.  The beautiful Lake Michigan shoreline is only a distance of about 26 miles, making it only a short drive to some of nature's most picturesque scenery. 

Economy and Local Business

St. Joseph County is home to the University of Notre Dame, one of the leading private universities in the nation and home of the Fighting Irish.  Several other private colleges in the area include Bethel College, Holy Cross College, and St. Mary's College.  Indiana University has a campus in South Bend with a Purdue extension. 

As of January 2001, the area's largest employers were the University of Notre Dame, South Bend Community School Corporation, and Memorial Health System.  AM General's Mishawaka plant produces the Hummer and also accounts for being the 5th largest employer (January 2001) in St. Joseph County.
